Celebrate Springtime in our Rockies

Spring Beauty

Gregory Canyon Spring Beauty

While you were sleeping Spring snuck into our backyard.  On March 19, 2008, at precisely 11:48 pm. MDT (March 20, 05:48 Universal Time), the Sun crossed directly over the Earth’s equator. This moment is known as the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.

The little purple Spring Beauties have figured this out and are celebrating all over our open space. As a photographer this means that the months of blue, green, white and brown are about to give way to the whole spectrum of colors. The best places to witness the first stirrings of Spring are low and wet (and muddy). Gregory Canyon is ideal as is the Homestead Trail. Watch those melting banks of snow and you may see a hairy pasque making it’s early debut.

Celebrate Spring by taking your camera on the trails. Send me your flower pix and I’ll post them here.

Saw your photos at East Boulder Rec, grabbed your card and found your blog. A nice site. I hope to be hiking a few more trails here this summer. If I get some flower photos, I will try to remember to send you a few. I have a list of Boulder bloggers on my site, I will add you.
