Happy Tails on Mt. Sanitas

The East Ridge->Mt. Sanitas ->Sanitas Valley Trail makes up a nice 3.3 mile loop with about a 1000′ foot elevation change. The Mount Sanitas trailhead is located 0.5 miles west of 4th St. on Mapleton Avenue. http://www.bouldercolorado.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3024&Itemid=1035 . This peak was named for the old sanitarium (health spa) that is now the Mapleton Medical Center. The old quarry yealded sandstone for the original building on CU’s campus. I’ve heard two pronunciations of Sanitas, should it be San-itas or Sani-tas?

The views are great and dogs are encouraged to take their guardians. Stop at the top for a panoramic view of the Valley, the Plains and the Back Range.  Dogs are not required on these trails, although sometimes it appears to be the case. The East Ridge can get pretty icy in spots so pack those Yaks.

I recently observed this stylish pup in the way down from the peak…
